Kathen Anne Cowan

Tis gude to be merry and wise. Tis gude to be honest and true

and before yer off wee the old luv, tis best to be on wee the new.

~ Scottish proverb

Kathen Anne Cowan was born in February 1953, on a Friday the 13th, in a hurricane, in a Quonset hut at the Kingston Point Naval base.

There are many things to know about Kathen, fondly called "Kit" by her friends and family, but the main character attribute to understand is her love of and allegiance to music. The happy times in her life were all surrounded by music. If you wish to know the rest she has published her autobiography on Amazon, called "The Tiger Puppet" by K. A. Cowan.

Around college age, Kathen decided the career she wanted was to be music. She started violin at age 8 in a public school, before-school lesson program at Prospect Elementary School in Pelham Manor, New York and continued through high school in Ossining, New York. At age 18, she was accepted to Ithaca College for Applied Violin. Three years later, Kit took a leave of absence to deal with family problems and left Ithaca.

In 1982 Kathen was married to Mark Reynolds, a fellow musician. That year she also added the Irish harp to her musical family and shortly afterwards began vocal lessons with Metropolitan opera singer, Beatrice Littau. It was only after marriage and two children that she returned to finish her Bachelor's degree. By then she had 20 years performance experience with her husband in the Reynolds & Cowan Duo, and was teaching privately. In 2001 Kathen became a NYS certified K-12 music teacher. She then taught in the public schools until 2016.

One of Kathen's favorite sayings is: "Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans." Isn't it true how this happens over and over? But another thing that is true in her life; it always comes back to music! Every time she thought she would become something else, music spoke loudest.

Kathen has performed for 40 years on violin, Irish harp and vocally. Her favorite genre is classical but she has performed fiddle, jazz and ethnic music of all kinds. She has performed in various groups as well, such as La Tipica Antillana, Kairos Consort, Cappella Festiva and as a hired soprano in several church & temple settings. Please visit the Gallery below.
