K.A. Cowan' family moved to Salzburg, Austria when she was age 5, she lived 2 years at the Schloss Leopskron, the castle where The Sound of Music was later filmed.

Her days were spent running through the Hazelnut groves and up hidden secret stair-passages. She skated and swam in the very lake that Julie Andrews and the children fell into from their boat, and played on the patio where the Captain and the Countess had breakfast.

It was here also, that her musical interests began, listening to Oompah Bands and international quartets visiting the castle to perform concerts. This was the home of the well known Salzburg Seminar, an American studies program overseas.
